Companies that want to integrate refugees into their operations or already employ refugees are familiar with the problem: There are many time-consuming bureaucratic hurdles, and not all of them can be overcome without professional assistance. Eda Onart from the training company of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) of the Middle Lower Rhine offers this support with the “Willkommenslotsen” module. Specialist advisor Eda Onart also supports refugees looking for a training position or job, establishing contact with companies and helping with all issues related to professional integration. And with success, as the example of Marwa Rahimi from Afghanistan shows.

The 20-year-old began an apprenticeship as a wholesale and foreign trade management assistant, specializing in wholesale, this year at TPS Elektronik GmbH in Mönchengladbach, a leading provider in the field of power electronics. “She’s settled in with us in no time. She feels at home, and the staff has taken her to their hearts,” says Jochen Gems, Site Manager at TPS Elektronik GmbH. “She performs her work with the utmost enthusiasm and diligence. As a trainer, I’ve been extremely satisfied with her so far and must admit that my expectations have been exceeded in almost every area.” There are still a few problems with understanding German, especially in vocational school. Gems: “But considering the few years she’s spent in Germany, it’s amazing how well things are going. We, and the teachers at the vocational school, are therefore very optimistic about the next few years of her training.”

Eda Onart is also convinced that Marwa Rahimi will master the training. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) consultant will continue to be available to the company for any questions, such as those relating to applications or current legal regulations and grants. “I would like to show companies ways in which this sometimes difficult path can be mastered together,” says Onart. In general, a number of requirements must be taken into account when providing vocational training to refugees. What should be considered regarding residence status? What language skills and level are required? What should be considered when applying for a training exemption, and is entry-level qualification recommended before training?
